Phuket Aquarium: Cape Panwa Visitor Guide

Phuket Aquarium: Cape Panwa Visitor Guide

Phuket Aquarium is a small government-run aquarium at Cape Panwa, in southeastern Phuket, open every day from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, with an 8-metre underwater tunnel where sharks and rays swim overhead. It is run by the Phuket Marine Biological Center, a marine research institute, and it has been open since 1983.

Most visitors to Phuket never think about an aquarium until the first rainy afternoon, or until the children have had enough of the beach. The Cape Panwa aquarium is the island’s original one: older, smaller and quieter than the big new mall aquarium, and far closer to the sea it shows. This guide covers what you see inside, the opening hours and who gets in free, how to get there, how it compares with Aquaria Phuket and whether it is worth the drive.

What the Aquarium Is

Phuket Aquarium is a public aquarium run by the Phuket Marine Biological Center (PMBC), part of the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (Thailand Tourism Directory). In Thai it is called สถานแสดงพันธุ์สัตว์น้ำภูเก็ต, which helps if you need to ask a driver.

The Phuket Marine Biological Center was founded on 16 October 1968 through co-operation between the governments of Thailand and Denmark, to carry out marine research and train students and scientists (Phuket Marine Biological Center). The aquarium opened in 1983 as the centre’s public face, so it feels more like a science museum than a theme park.

What You See Inside

The aquarium shows about 100 species of aquatic plants, freshwater animals and marine animals, in a mix of freshwater and sea tanks. It is a compact visit: you can see everything in about an hour.

The highlight is the 8-metre underwater tunnel, where sharks, rays and other fish glide over your head. It is short, so children tend to walk through it several times. Expect a modest, older building rather than a glossy attraction.

  • The tunnel: 8 metres long, with sharks and rays overhead.
  • Marine tanks: sea fish and other marine animals.
  • Freshwater tanks: freshwater fish and aquatic plants.
  • Souvenir shop: on site.

Phuket Aquarium is open every day from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, and ticket sales close at 4:00 pm (as of October 2026, Thailand Tourism Directory). Arrive by 3:00 pm if you want an unhurried visit.

Getting There

The aquarium is at the very end of Sakdidej Road on Cape Panwa, about 30 minutes from Phuket Town. The easiest way to get there is by taxi or a hired car; there is parking on site.

On a budget, take a songthaew (a shared open-sided bus) on the Makham Bay and Aquarium route from Phuket Town. It is slower than a taxi, so ask the driver about return times before you go. From Patong, Kata or the west coast beaches, allow about an hour each way by car.

Best Time to Visit Phuket Aquarium

The best time to visit Phuket Aquarium is at 8:30 am, when it opens, or on a rainy afternoon. Mornings are quieter and cooler, and you can be back on a beach by lunchtime.

An aquarium visit makes the most sense in the rainy season, when a shower can wash out a beach day. Our guide to the best time to visit Phuket explains the seasons month by month.

Phuket Aquarium vs Aquaria Phuket

Phuket Aquarium and Aquaria Phuket are two different places: the first is the small, state-run aquarium at Cape Panwa; Aquaria Phuket is the large, modern aquarium inside the Central Phuket shopping centre, billed by its developer as the largest underwater world in Thailand ({a(CPN, ‘Central Phuket’)}).

Choose Cape Panwa for a short, low-key visit with young children, or if you are already in the south of the island. Choose Aquaria Phuket if you want the bigger show and plan to combine it with shopping and lunch at the mall.

What to Combine It With

The aquarium is easy to pair with the sights of southern Phuket, so make it part of a half-day rather than a trip on its own: add Wat Chalong or the Big Buddha on the same day.

It is also a good add-on before or after a boat trip from Chalong Pier, or an afternoon in Phuket Old Town for coffee and shophouses.

Is Phuket Aquarium Worth It?

The Cape Panwa aquarium is worth it for families with young children, on a rainy day, or if you like small, old-fashioned aquariums with a science focus: it is cheap, calm and over in an hour or so.

The aquarium is not worth a special trip from Patong or the northern beaches if you expect a big, modern attraction. In that case, Aquaria Phuket is the better choice, or put the time into a snorkelling trip and see the fish in the sea.

Where to Stay Near Cape Panwa

Staying in or near Phuket Town puts the aquarium about half an hour away, with the Old Town, Wat Chalong and Chalong Pier all within easy reach, which suits a family that wants more than a beach.

This is where we at Silqhaus come into the picture. Silqhaus, a Phuket and Pattaya holiday-rental company, has Niva Villa near Phuket Old Town, with a lake view, and Treva Villa near Phuket Town, with three bedrooms and a private pool. Every home is run by our own local team, who you can message directly from day one, and booking direct is at least 10% cheaper than the same home on Airbnb, Booking.com or Vrbo.
