Getting from Phuket airport to Patong takes about 45–60 minutes by car or about 90 minutes on the Phuket Smart Bus, which costs a flat 100 THB per person. Phuket International Airport is in the far north of the island and Patong is on the west coast, about 35–40 km away by road, so whichever way you go, plan on the better part of an hour.
The choice comes down to time, luggage and how many of you there are. A couple travelling light can ride the bus along the west coast for the price of a coffee. A family with three suitcases who just got off a long-haul flight will be happier in a car that leaves when they do.
This guide compares every option, then goes through the Smart Bus timetable and fares, taxis and limousines, ride-hailing apps, pre-booked transfers, what to do if you land late, the trip back to the airport, and a few tips for your first hour on the island.

Phuket Airport to Patong: Your Options Compared
For most travellers, the Smart Bus is the best value and a car is the best comfort; there is no official shortcut such as a train or a fast ferry. The table sums up the four ways to get from Phuket airport to Patong. Times are door to door and approximate, and depend on traffic.
| Option | Cost | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Phuket Smart Bus | 100 THB per person | 80–90 min |
| Taxi or limousine | Per car, quoted at the counter | 45–60 min |
| Ride-hailing app | Per car, shown in the app | 45–60 min |
| Pre-booked transfer | Per car, paid in advance | 45–60 min |
Two things tip the balance. First, a car price is per vehicle, so for three or four people sharing, the gap with the bus shrinks quickly. Second, the bus only runs from 08:15 to 23:30 from the airport, so an early-morning or after-midnight landing leaves you with a car either way.
The Phuket Smart Bus: 100 THB to Patong
The Phuket Smart Bus is the cheapest published way from the airport to Patong: a flat 100 THB per person, whether you ride to Patong or all the way to Rawai, as of October 2026. Children under six ride free with a paying adult. You can pay by tapping a contactless Visa, Mastercard or JCB card on board, by scanning the bus’s QR code with a Thai banking app, or in cash. The operator lists all of this on its fares and payment page.
The Smart Bus is a public route bus that stops along the way, not a tourist shuttle to your hotel door. A cabin bag and one suitcase each are manageable; several large cases will be awkward when the bus is busy, and you still have the walk from the Patong stop to your accommodation.
Smart Bus timetable from the airport
On the timetable in force since 16 January 2026, the first bus leaves Phuket airport at 08:15, then buses run every 30 minutes from 09:00 to 22:00, with two late departures at 22:40 and 23:30. The Patong stop is PEA Patong (the electricity office), about 80–90 minutes after leaving the airport: the 09:00 bus, for example, is due there at 10:30.
The bus does not take the shortest road. It follows the west coast south, stopping at Thalang, Baan Khian, Cherngtalay (the Bang Tao area), Surin Beach, Kamala and Phuket Fantasea before it reaches Patong, then carries on to Karon, Kata and Rawai Beach. That is why it is slower than a taxi, but it is also a cheap first look at half the west coast.

Day passes
If you plan to use the bus during your stay, the operator also sells day passes for Route 1 (airport to Rawai): 299 THB for 24 hours, 499 THB for three days and 799 THB for seven days, as of October 2026. A 24-hour pass pays for itself on the third ride, so it suits a day of beach-hopping rather than the airport ride alone.
- Check the live map: the operator’s GPS tracking page shows where each bus is.
- Carry small notes if you pay cash; exact fare is appreciated.
- Tell the driver “Patong” when you board so you get a nudge at the right stop.
Taxis and Limousines from the Arrivals Hall
A taxi or limousine from the official counters in the arrivals hall is the simplest door-to-door option from Phuket airport to Patong, at about 45–60 minutes. You tell the counter your hotel or address, get a price for the whole car and a ticket, and a driver walks you to the vehicle.
Airports of Thailand does not publish a Phuket taxi price list online (we checked its transport page in October 2026), and the fares quoted on travel sites range widely and are often years old, so we do not repeat them here. Ask for the total price before you leave the counter, including any airport fee and motorway or parking costs, and make sure it is per car, not per person.
Ignore anyone who approaches you inside the terminal offering a ride, and use the counters or the marked taxi rank instead. Some drivers suggest a stop at a travel agency or a jewellery shop on the way; you can politely say no and ask to go straight to your address.
Ride-Hailing Apps
Ride-hailing apps such as Grab and Bolt work in Phuket and show a fixed price before you book, which takes the haggling out of the airport ride. Install the app and add a payment card before you fly, as you may not have mobile data until you buy a SIM or switch on roaming.
App prices change with demand, so the same ride from Phuket airport to Patong can cost noticeably more when several flights land at once or it is raining. Follow the app’s directions to the pick-up point and check the number plate before you get in. Our guide to SIM cards in Thailand explains how to get connected on arrival.
Pre-Booked Transfers
A pre-booked transfer is the calmest option after a long flight: a driver waits in arrivals with your name on a sign, the price is agreed and usually paid in advance, and you walk straight past the queues. It is the one to choose with young children, lots of luggage or a group that needs a van.
Hotels and many holiday rentals can arrange a driver for you, or you can book with a transfer company online. Send your flight number rather than your landing time, so the driver can track delays, and keep the driver’s phone or messaging details handy in case you cannot find each other.
Arriving Late at Night
If you land after about 22:30, plan on a car: the last Smart Bus leaves the airport at 23:30, and once it has gone, taxis, limousines and app rides are the only way to Patong. Immigration and baggage can easily take an hour at busy times, so a flight due at 22:00 may still miss the last bus.
At night the drive to Patong is quicker, often closer to 45 minutes, but the last stretch is a steep, winding road over the hill into town. If you are tempted to rent a car or scooter on arrival, wait until the next day, when you are rested and can see the road.
Patong to the Airport: Going Home
Going back, the Smart Bus leaves Patong from the Bangla Police Box stop, near the beach end of Bangla Road, between 06:00 and 20:20, and takes about 90 minutes to reach the airport, as of October 2026. The 06:00 bus is due at the airport at 07:32; the last one, at 20:20, is due at 21:52.
For an international flight, aim to be at the airport about three hours before departure. That means leaving Patong about four and a half hours before take-off on the bus, or about four hours before by car, with extra time in the afternoon rush and in heavy rain. For a dawn flight, book a car the evening before.
Tips for Your First Hour
A few small things make the first hour from the airport to Patong easier, whichever transport you choose.
- Withdraw or exchange a little cash in arrivals for the bus or small purchases; Thai ATMs charge foreign cards a fee per withdrawal, so take out one larger sum rather than several small ones.
- Save your address in Thai or as a map pin: many villas and condos in Patong are on small side streets that drivers may not know by name.
- Expect afternoon traffic on the hill into Patong, especially between about 16:00 and 19:00, and allow extra time in heavy rain.
- Arriving in the wet season? From May to October, short heavy showers are common; our guide to the best time to visit Phuket has the month-by-month numbers.
Once you are in town, our Patong Beach guide covers the beach, Bangla Road and where to eat, and what to do in Patong has ideas for the days that follow.
Where to Stay in Patong
Patong is the busiest resort town on Phuket, with the island’s main nightlife strip, so where you stay matters. The hillsides and the quieter streets back from Bangla Road give you the beach and restaurants within reach without the noise.

This is where we at Silqhaus come into the picture. Silqhaus, a Phuket and Pattaya holiday-rental company, has BS Villa Phuket, a private villa in Patong, plus apartments in Bang Tao on the same Smart Bus route and villas near Phuket Town. Every home is run by our own local team, and you can message them directly from the first day, which helps when you are planning your ride from the airport. Book direct and you pay at least 10% less than on Airbnb, Booking.com or Vrbo for the same home and dates.
