Kalim Beach Phuket: Patong’s Quiet Neighbour

Kalim Beach Phuket: Patong’s Quiet Neighbour

Kalim Beach is a small, rocky bay at the far northern end of Patong Bay in Phuket, on the coast road towards Kamala. It is not a swimming beach: people come for the surf in the low season, the sunsets and the restaurants on the rocks.

Patong is loud, packed and fun. A few minutes up the road, the sand gives way to boulders, the bars give way to fishermen and dog walkers, and the evening crowd is there for dinner rather than Bangla Road. This guide covers what Kalim is really like, why you shouldn’t plan a swim there, the surf season, where to eat, how to get there and how Kalim compares with Patong Beach.

What Kalim Beach Is Like

Kalim is a modest bay right next to Patong Beach, on the way to Kamala (Phuket 101). Surfers describe it as the far northern end of Patong Bay (Saltwater Dreaming), and from the road it can look like part of Patong.

The difference is underfoot. The sand at Kalim is rough and coarse, and the seafloor is mostly rocks and dead coral, so few people lie out on it (Phuket 101). Locals come to walk their dogs, fish from the rocks and eat at the street food stalls that set up at the end of each afternoon.

Can You Swim at Kalim Beach?

Kalim is not a good place to swim. Phuket 101 calls it “not a swimming beach” because the seafloor is rocks and dead coral, and the coral underfoot is sharp (Phuket 101).

If you want a swim, walk or drive back to the sandy part of Patong Beach, or head north to Kamala. Our Patong Beach guide covers the swimming season and the red flags there. At Kalim, wear sandals if you walk on the rocks.

Surfing at Kalim: The Low-Season Reef Break

Kalim is one of Phuket’s most popular surf spots from May to October, when the southwest monsoon sends consistent swells to the west coast; the waves are best at mid to high tide (Jungceylon).

The wave is a shallow coral reef break, mostly rights with the occasional left. A ride lasts about 50 to 100 metres and gets very shallow at the end (Saltwater Dreaming). It is not a beginner spot: the take-off area can get busy, so learners are better off at Bang Tao or Kata.

Even if you don’t surf, it is worth watching from the road or a restaurant terrace on a good swell day. The Kalim Patong Surfing Contest was held there on 18 to 20 September 2026, with shortboard and longboard divisions (Saltwater Dreaming); dates change each year, so check local announcements.

Sunset and Street Food

The best time of day at Kalim is the hour before sunset. At the end of the afternoon, many cars park along the seashore selling all kinds of dishes (Phuket 101).

Bring cash, pick a few things that look good and find a spot on the sea wall. It is a much calmer evening than the beach road in Patong, and a good warm-up before a night out there.

Where to Eat at Kalim

Kalim has some of the best restaurants around Patong, from Michelin-listed dinners to a simple Thai seafood place on the water. These are the ones worth knowing:

L’Arôme by the Sea

L’Arôme by the Sea is a modern French restaurant listed in the MICHELIN Guide, at 247/5 Phrabaramee Road. Start with a drink on the rooftop, then move down for a seafood-led tasting menu with sea views. It opens at 4:00 pm and closes at 11:00 pm (as of November 2026, Phuket 101); check the closing day before you book.

Acqua

Acqua is an Italian restaurant listed in the MICHELIN Guide, at 324/15 Phra Barami Road, where Chef Alessandro Frau cooks Italian food with a Sardinian touch. It sits by the road with no sea view, so book it for the food, not the sunset (Phuket 101). It is open for dinner only, until 11:00 pm (as of November 2026).

Casual Places on the Water

  • Kalim Rim Lay: local Thai food and fresh seafood in bamboo huts by the sea; a halal restaurant, so no alcohol or pork.
  • Salsa Mexicana: Mexican food on terraces built into the rocky hillside above the sea, with wide sunset views.
  • SeaSalt Lounge and Grill: the seaside restaurant and bar of Diamond Cliff Resort, with charcoal-grilled seafood and meat.

Details of these three are from Phuket 101; call ahead in the low season, when hours can change.

Getting There

Kalim is on the coast road between Patong and Kamala, about 5 minutes by car from central Patong. From the northern end of Patong Beach you can walk there along the seafront road.

  • Taxi or ride-hailing: the easiest option from anywhere in Patong; ask for Kalim or one of the restaurants above.
  • Phuket Smart Bus: the Airport to Rawai line runs down the west coast via Kamala and Patong (Phuket Smart Bus); check the stop and times in its app on the day.
  • Scooter or car: parking is roadside and limited in the evening; some restaurants and resorts have their own parking.

Arriving from the airport? Our Phuket airport to Patong guide compares the bus, taxis and transfers; Kalim is just past Patong on the same road.

Best Time to Visit Kalim Beach

The best time to visit Kalim depends on why you go. For surfing, come from May to October, when the southwest monsoon brings the swell. For sunsets, calm seas and dinner by the water, come from November to April, Phuket’s dry season.

September and early October usually have the heaviest rain and roughest seas of the year (Jungceylon). For a month-by-month picture, see our guide to the best time to visit Phuket.

Kalim Beach vs Patong Beach

Kalim and Patong share the same bay but suit different days. Patong is for swimming, water sports and nightlife; Kalim is for surfing, sunsets and a quieter dinner.
