Ask people who know Pattaya where they actually go to the beach, and many will point south, over Pratumnak Hill. Jomtien Beach is a 6 km strip of sand about 3 km south of central Pattaya: wider, straighter and noticeably calmer than Pattaya Beach, with condos, seafood restaurants and a long beach road instead of go-go bars. It is where families, long-stay visitors and a lot of Thai weekenders from Bangkok spend their days.
It is not a postcard beach. The water is shallow and often cloudy, the skyline is high-rise, and parts of the sand are still being rebuilt. This guide is honest about all of that: what each end of the beach is like, how it compares with Pattaya Beach, the beach works, food and nightlife, getting there, and when to go.

What Jomtien Is Like
Jomtien Beach is a long, open, easy-going city beach. A promenade and the beach road run beside the sand for most of its length, lined with palms and shade trees on one side and hotels, condo towers, cafés and seafood restaurants on the other. Deckchairs and umbrellas are rented by the day, vendors walk the sand, and the whole scene is slower than in central Pattaya.
The mood changes through the day. Mornings belong to joggers, cyclists and people walking dogs along the promenade. Afternoons are for families under umbrellas and jet skis offshore. By sunset the beach road fills with people eating, and Koh Larn and the smaller islands around it turn into silhouettes to the west.
Jomtien has a large long-stay community. Wikipedia notes that many Russian and Scandinavian visitors stay or live here, and you will see menus and signs in several languages. That makes it an easy place for a first trip to Thailand, and a good base for a week or a month rather than a single night.
Jomtien from North to South
The beach has three distinct parts, and which one you pick shapes the whole visit. The north is the quietest and closest to Pattaya, the middle is the busiest, and the south is the most local.
Dongtan Beach (north end)
Dongtan Beach is the first stretch south of Pratumnak Hill, where Jomtien begins. It is shaded by trees, has a relaxed, mixed crowd and has long been popular with LGBTQ+ travellers. It is the closest part of Jomtien to Pattaya, about 10 to 15 minutes by car from the centre over the hill.
Central Jomtien
Central Jomtien, along the middle of the beach road, is where most of the umbrellas, water-sports operators, restaurants and hotels are. It is the liveliest part of Jomtien by day and the best place for an evening walk and dinner.
South Jomtien and Na Jomtien
The southern end of Jomtien is quieter, with more condos and fewer tourists. Beyond it lies Na Jomtien, a separate, calmer beach area with beach clubs and resorts. It is the closest area to Rhythm Park, which makes it a popular base for the big festivals held there.
Jomtien Beach vs Pattaya Beach
Jomtien Beach is the better choice for a beach day; Pattaya Beach is the better choice for being in the middle of everything. Pattaya Beach is a curved 2.7 km bay right in the city centre, with Walking Street at its south end. Jomtien is more than twice as long, sits across Pratumnak Hill and has far more room on the sand.

The Beach Widening Works (2023–2027)
Jomtien’s sand is being rebuilt with pumped sand to undo years of erosion, and the work is still going on as of September 2026. The first phase, finished on 22 September 2023, widened 3,575 metres of beach to an average of about 50 metres of sand, according to Pattaya Mail. That is the wide, flat beach you see in recent photos.
The second phase, a 318 million THB contract, extends the work along the rest of the beach in 300-metre sections over about 900 days, with completion expected in 2027, according to The Pattaya News. The work moves 300 metres at a time, with sand-pumping pipes and bulldozers on the active section. If you are booking a beachfront hotel, ask whether the works are in front of it.
Swimming and Water Sports
You can swim at Jomtien Beach, and on most days the Gulf of Thailand here is warm, shallow and gentle. The water is often cloudy rather than clear, and at low tide it can be shallow for a long way out. Swim inside the buoyed swimming zones, away from jet skis and boats, and keep children close.
Water sports are part of Jomtien’s identity. Wikipedia lists windsurfing, jet skis, parasailing and scuba diving, and the beach has hosted a Jet Ski World Cup event. Operators line the central stretch. Agree the price and the time before you start, check the jet ski for existing scratches and take photos of it, so there is no argument about damage later.

Food, the Night Market and Nightlife
Jomtien is at its best at dinner time. Seafood restaurants along the beach road grill fish, prawns and squid by the sea, and simple Thai places and street stalls fill the side sois. Prices are generally lower than on Pattaya Beach Road.
Jomtien Night Market sits beside the beach road in central Jomtien and opens from late afternoon into the evening, with food stalls, snacks, clothes and souvenirs. Getting to Jomtien and Getting Around
Jomtien is about 165 km south-east of Bangkok, which is about 2 to 3 hours by car or bus depending on traffic. Suvarnabhumi Airport is about 120 km away, roughly 1.5 hours by car, and U-Tapao Airport is about 40 km south, roughly 50 minutes.
- From Bangkok by bus: buses run from Ekkamai (Eastern Bus Terminal) and from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Pattaya; from Pattaya, take a baht bus or Grab to Jomtien.
- By taxi or private car: the simplest option with luggage or a group, door to door.
- From central Pattaya: baht buses run over Pratumnak Hill and along Thepprasit Road to Jomtien. Fares rose on 10 April 2026 to 15–20 THB a ride depending on distance (The Pattaya News; as of September 2026).
- Around Jomtien: baht buses run along the beach road; wave one down and press the buzzer to get off. Grab and Bolt work too, and the promenade is flat enough to walk or cycle.
Best Time to Visit Jomtien Beach
The best time to visit Jomtien Beach is November to February, when Pattaya gets only 12–57 mm of rain a month and the sea is usually calm. December and January are the driest months and also the busiest, especially over Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year.

Pattaya is drier than Phuket even in the wet season, with about 1,106 mm of rain a year, so Jomtien is a reasonable choice from June to August too.
The beach is also one of Pattaya’s event venues. In 2026 it hosted the second week of the Pattaya Music Festival, free concerts on the sand on 13–14 March, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand. Dates change every year, so check before you plan around one.
Where to Stay Near Jomtien
Where to stay depends on what you want from the trip. Stay in Jomtien itself for a quiet, beach-first holiday, on Pratumnak Hill to be between Jomtien and the city, or in central Pattaya or Wongamat if you want the beach to be one part of a wider city trip. For more than a few nights, a condo with a kitchen and a sea view usually beats a hotel room.
