Bang Tao Beach is one of Phuket’s longest beaches, roughly 6 to 8 km of pale sand on the northwest coast between Surin and Layan. Its southern end has beach clubs such as Catch, the centre is lined by the Laguna Phuket resort hotels, and the northern end towards Layan is almost empty, so there is always a quieter stretch to find.
Phuket has dozens of beaches, and most top out at a kilometre or two. Bang Tao’s length changes the whole character of the place: there is always more beach ahead of you, and always enough space to feel you have found something of your own, even in high season. It is a beach of contrasts, with five-star resorts in one part and fishing boats pulled up on the shore in another.

Bang Tao Beach in Brief
Bang Tao Bay curves gently along Phuket’s northwest coast, its sand a pale gold that is finer and lighter than many of the island’s beaches. The sea is the same turquoise as every postcard of Thailand, though, like all the west-coast beaches, the water changes character dramatically between the dry and wet seasons.
The bay has an unusual history: according to Phuket Province, it was once a tin-mining area before it was developed into a resort area, and Laguna Phuket, one of Asia’s largest resort complexes, was built on the old mine site. Its scale is what makes it special: you can walk for an hour in either direction without reaching the end, and different sections have entirely different atmospheres.
South, Laguna and the Quiet North
The southern part of Bang Tao, closest to Surin, is the liveliest, with beach clubs such as Catch Beach Club, which moved here after Surin’s clubs were demolished in 2016. The central section is Laguna Phuket: several hotels, including Banyan Tree and Angsana, arranged around interconnected lagoons, with a managed, family-friendly beachfront.

Keep walking north and the atmosphere shifts. The resort infrastructure thins out, replaced by a natural shoreline backed by casuarinas and low scrub, with fishing boats moored offshore, until the beach reaches Layan. On an island as developed as Phuket, that near-wild stretch is its own kind of luxury. Neither end is better; they suit different days.
Swimming and Conditions
Bang Tao is generally good for swimming from November to April. The bay is so long that conditions vary between sections on any given day. From May to October the surf picks up considerably and the beach is red-flagged on rough days; respect the flags, because Bang Tao’s currents can be deceptive.
The gradual slope of the seabed makes Bang Tao good for families: you can wade out a long way before the water gets deep. Phuket Province notes a coral reef in the north of the bay for snorkelling and diving on calm days.
What to Do at Bang Tao
Beyond swimming and lounging, Bang Tao has a solid range of activities. Kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and other water sports are available from operators on the beach and at Laguna’s water sports centre.

The beach walk is an activity in itself: covering the whole bay takes around two hours at a comfortable pace, and at sunrise, when the light is extraordinary and the sand almost empty, it is one of the best free experiences in Phuket. Laguna Golf Phuket sits just inland, so Bang Tao is one of the few places where you can combine a round of golf with an afternoon on the beach.
Where to Eat
Laguna’s hotel restaurants are polished, reliable and priced accordingly. Outside the resorts, Cherngtalay (Choeng Thale), a short drive inland, has become one of the best dining areas in Phuket, with Thai and international restaurants that punch well above their price, and Boat Avenue has a cluster of cafés and restaurants. Our Boat Avenue Phuket guide covers its restaurants, Villa Market and the Friday night market.
On the beach, a handful of local Thai restaurants in the central and northern sections serve fresh seafood and Thai classics at prices that are a welcome relief from resort menus. For a beach-club afternoon, head to the southern end.
Where to Stay
Bang Tao has one of the most varied accommodation ranges in Phuket: Laguna’s five-star hotels in the centre, and villas and apartments in Cherngtalay and Layan behind the beach, often at outstanding value compared with a beachfront hotel room.
This is where we at Silqhaus come into the picture. Silqhaus, a Phuket and Pattaya holiday-rental company, has several homes right here in Bang Tao: Zcape1, an apartment with a big terrace, and the ZcapeX2 pool-view apartments near Boat Avenue. Booking direct is always at least 10% below Airbnb and Booking.com for the same home and dates.
Getting There
Bang Tao is about 25 minutes from Phuket International Airport, one of the most convenient beaches for arrivals. Metered airport taxis start at 150 THB for the first 2 km plus a 100 THB airport fee set by the Ministry of Transport (as of September 2026); Grab is also available.
From Surin Beach, Bang Tao is about 2 km north, according to Phuket Province, and Naithon is a short drive further up the coast. From Patong it is around 30 minutes’ drive. A scooter or car gives you the most flexibility for exploring the area.
Best Time to Visit
November to April is the best window: calm seas, lower humidity and the beach at its most photogenic. January and February are the prime months for swimming. December is the busiest and most expensive, though Bang Tao’s size absorbs visitors better than smaller beaches. For every month, see our guide to the best time to visit Phuket.
From May to October conditions are rougher, but accommodation rates drop and the beach is far less crowded. If you surf or simply enjoy dramatic weather, the green season has its own appeal. For more ideas, visit our guides section.
