Phuket New Year’s Eve: Where to Count Down

There is a second large countdown near Phuket Town, fireworks from beach clubs in Kamala and Bang Tao and from hotels at Karon and Kata, and ticketed parties such as Paradise Beach south of Patong.

Trade the winter coat for a swimsuit: on 31 December the island becomes one of Asia’s liveliest places to start the year, whether you want a huge beach party or a quiet dinner by the sea. Here is where to go and how to plan it for New Year’s Eve 2026.

Why a Phuket New Year Is Different

Most of us are used to waiting for midnight in the cold. Phuket flips that: fireworks burst over the Andaman Sea, the evenings are warm, and you can go from a beach party to a quiet dinner on the same night.

New Year falls in the dry season, so the sea is calm and the skies are usually clear. It is also the busiest week of the year, which is why planning ahead matters. Thailand has more festivals than New Year; see our Songkran guide for the Thai New Year in April.

Where to Count Down in Phuket

You choose how loud your Phuket New Year is. The island splits into a few very different options:

1. The Party Hub: Patong Beach and Bangla Road

Patong is the most intense option. The free Patong Countdown on the beach usually runs for several nights before 31 December, with Thai bands on stage each evening and a big fireworks display at midnight on the last night. Bangla Road is packed until dawn. It is loud, crowded and full of energy; see our Patong Beach guide.

2. The Local Experience: Near Phuket Town

A second large countdown takes place near Phuket Town, with Thai artists and DJs on stage and fireworks at midnight, attended by many local families. It is lively but less of a party than Patong. Phuket Old Town itself has seasonal lights but no organised countdown, so combine an evening there with the event.

3. The Chic Escape: Beach Clubs and Hotels

For a party without the street crowds, the beach clubs of Kamala and Bang Tao run ticketed events with DJs and their own fireworks, and hotels at Karon, Kata and Nai Harn put on shows for gala guests. South of Patong, Paradise Beach holds a big ticketed party, with a free shuttle from the police box opposite Bangla Road from 7 pm to midnight (as of September 2026).

The Days Around New Year

The whole week between Christmas and New Year is festive. Use the days for the island’s classics: an early boat trip before the crowds (see our island hopping guide), a sunset at Promthep Cape, or the Old Town’s cafés and markets. On 1 January many locals make merit at temples such as Wat Chalong in the morning, a calm way to start the year.

If you are travelling with children, the early-evening part of the Patong Countdown, with bands and food stalls, is fun for families; watch the midnight fireworks from a quieter beach such as Kata or Karon, where there is more space on the sand.

Stress-Free Countdown Tips

New Year is Phuket’s busiest week, so a little planning goes a long way:

  • Book early: rooms, flights and restaurant tables for 31 December sell out and prices peak.
  • Check for gala dinners: many hotels make a New Year’s Eve gala dinner compulsory, charged on top of the room; read the terms before booking.
  • Beat the traffic: roads into Patong jam from the early evening; arrive by 7 pm or walk.
  • Plan your ride home: taxis and Grab are scarce after midnight; agree a pickup or stay within walking distance.
  • Sky lanterns and fireworks: releasing lanterns is restricted in many areas, especially near the airport flight path, so follow local rules and leave fireworks to the organisers.
  • Leave the beach clean: take your rubbish with you; beaches are often littered on 1 January, and volunteers clean up in the morning.

Weather at New Year

Late December and early January are among the best weeks of the year for weather in Phuket: dry, sunny and calm, with daytime highs around 31 to 32°C and warm evenings around 25°C. West-coast seas are usually safe for swimming. See our best time to visit Phuket for the full picture.

Where to Stay for New Year

Stay in Patong if you want to walk to the countdown and Bangla Road; Kata, Karon and the south for fireworks with more space; Bang Tao for beach-club parties.

This is where we at Silqhaus come into the picture. Silqhaus, a Phuket and Pattaya holiday-rental company, has BS Villa in Patong, a short walk from the beach countdown, plus apartments in Bang Tao and villas in Rawai and near Phuket Town. A private rental means no compulsory gala dinner, and booking direct is always at least 10% below Airbnb and Booking.com for the same home and dates.

Is It Worth It in the End?

Yes, if you plan ahead. A Phuket New Year combines a big, warm-weather party with calm beaches and island days. Book your stay and transport early, choose the kind of night you want, and it is a memorable way to start the year.
